What is the difference between Single Origin and Blend?
If you're a coffee lover, you've probably heard of single-origin and blends. But what do these terms really mean, and which is better? In this post, we'll explain the difference between single-origin and blends and give you some tips on how to choose the coffee that best suits you.
Single-origin coffee is coffee that comes from a single source, most often in our case, a region/collective or a farm. It can even be a specific variety or processing method of the coffee. The purpose of single-origin coffee is to highlight the unique flavors that nature creates through terroir, which means the place, weather, and soil. Single-origin coffee can vary in taste from year to year depending on weather conditions and other factors that affect the coffee's quality. When you drink single-origin coffee, you get to taste a specific place and a moment in time, which makes it a special experience.
Blends are coffees consisting of several different coffee varieties from different origins. Blends are created to achieve a certain flavor profile that combines characteristics from several different coffees. Good blends can be deep and complex, but poorly matched coffees can result in an overly simplified taste. Blends are also created to produce a consistent product that tastes the same every time. For example, a roastery might choose to create a dark-roasted blend with flavors of baked spices and chocolate. They find several single-origin coffees that, when blended, produce the desired flavor profile. If they run out of one of the coffees in the blend, for example, because they are harvested at different times of the year, they can replace it with a similar coffee to maintain the flavor. This means that blends can be available all year round.
Which is better: single-origin or blends? It depends on what you're looking for in your cup of coffee. It's easier to know what you're getting with blends because they are intentionally consistent. Blends often provide a balanced cup that has been strategically created by the roastery. So some blends might be better suited, for example, with cream and sugar or a special espresso character.
At Kaffeboxen, we have both single-origin and blends for all tastes and occasions.
